Star SW-20 Swiss Lathe with Z3 Axis: Speed, Precision, and Power

  • Emily Brewer

At Concept, we’re always on the lookout for the next innovation in high-performance machining—and we’ve found it in the Star SW-20 Swiss-type lathe. Designed for high-volume, high-precision applications, the SW-20 delivers next-level control, significant cycle time reduction, and optimized tool performance.

We sat down with Jeff Garson, Applications Engineer at Concept, to learn what makes this machine a serious upgrade from traditional Swiss lathes—especially when it comes to speed, precision, and cutting cycle times.

What Makes the SW-20 Unique

Most Swiss-type lathes offer speed and repeatability, but the Star SW-20 pushes performance even further with intelligent engineering upgrades.

  1. Independent Z3 Axis with 1.9” Stroke

One of the standout features is the Z3 independent axis. With a 1.9-inch stroke, this axis allows the machine to perform lathe mode operations, where the material can be parked while the tools do the moving. This opens up more complex operations and contributes directly to reduced cycle time—a critical benefit for customers running high-volume parts.

  1. Three-Path Control for Simultaneous Operations

The SW-20 is equipped with a three-path control system, enabling multiple tool paths to operate at once. This means turning, milling, and drilling can happen simultaneously, drastically reducing the time required for each part. It’s ideal for manufacturers looking to scale production without sacrificing accuracy.

  1. Integrated Manifolds for High-Pressure Coolant Delivery

Another thoughtful design improvement is the pre-installed manifolds that make it easy to connect quick-connect coolant lines. This feature delivers high-pressure coolant directly to the cutting edge of each tool—maximizing tool life and improving chip evacuation.

Who Should Consider the SW-20

If you’re a manufacturer running high-volume, complex parts, or working in industries like medical device, automotive, or aerospace, the Star SW-20 can help you:

  • Slash cycle times
  • Maximize spindle uptime
  • Improve throughput without expanding floor space
  • Increase margin on repeat jobs
