During Steakfest, we had the opportunity to sit down with Phil Wiss from United Grinding,…
At Concept’s recent open house, we sat down with Steve Schermann from Milltronics to take a closer look at one of the standout machines on the floor—the
Milltronics 4224IL Vertical Mill.
Designed for performance, flexibility, and ease of use, the 4224IL supports both experienced machinists and shops that need to move fast without added complexity.
Built for Performance on the Shop Floor
The 4224IL is part of Milltronics’ high-performance IL series, featuring a direct-drive spindle (no belts) delivering
12,000 RPM standard with a 15,000 RPM option. This improves surface finish, reduces maintenance, and supports demanding applications.
Additional shop-floor-ready features include:
- Linear roller ways for rigidity and accuracy
- Integrated chip conveyor (standard)
- Robust washdown system for efficient chip removal
Open Bed Design for Larger Workpieces
The open bed configuration offers generous travel:
- X-axis: 42 inches
- Y-axis: 24 inches
- Z-axis: 24 inches
The oversized table provides additional clearance beyond axis travel, allowing full use of the machine envelope—ideal for job shops and prototype work.
Conversational Control + CNC G-Code
One of the biggest advantages of Milltronics machines is the ability to run both conversational programming and ISO G-code on the same control.
The Milltronics conversational control
allows quick program creation using built-in cycles like:
- Pockets
- Slotting
- Bolt hole circles
- Thread milling
Operators fill in parameters and the control generates the program—ideal for low-volume work without CAM dependency.
For advanced workflows, the CNC side supports:
- ISO G-code compatibility
- On-control toolpath simulation
- Zoom and visualization tools before cycle start
Inspire Control: Modern Software, Simple Updates
The 4224IL runs on Milltronics’ Inspire Control, featuring digital drives for improved motion and finish.
Updates are loaded via USB and supported through Concept as your local dealer, with releases typically occurring quarterly.
Training Without Risk
Milltronics also offers a standalone Inspire control for training and practice. Operators can:
- Learn programming without risk of crashes
- Build programs offline
- Transfer files directly to the machine
This shortens the learning curve and builds confidence before real cutting begins.
A Flexible Solution for Modern Shops
Whether running full CAM programs or quick conversational machining, the
Milltronics 4224IL
delivers flexibility without sacrificing performance.
