Surface finish matters—and when you need accurate roughness measurements on the go, you want a tool that’s quick, reliable, and easy to use. That’s exactly what the ZEISS Handysurf+ E35 delivers.
This compact surface finish tester is ideal for machine shops, quality labs, and field inspections where portability and precision go hand-in-hand. In this post, we’ll walk you through a basic measurement and show how the E35 simplifies the process without sacrificing accuracy.
Step-by-Step Surface Roughness Check

We performed a surface finish check on a flat machined plane using the ZEISS Handysurf+ E35. Here’s how it works:
1. Place the Probe
Lay the stylus flat on the surface—make sure it’s stable and not rocking. Proper contact ensures accurate results.
2. Run the Trace
From the main menu, press the measure/stop button. The system performs a trace across a 150,000 µin (microinch) evaluation length, returning to the starting point once complete—ready for the next scan.
3. View Results
This test delivered an Ra value of 195 µin, a common surface roughness metric. But the E35 gives you much more than just Ra.
Use the arrow keys to scroll through other surface finish parameters you’ve enabled, such as:
-
Ra – Average roughness
-
Rq – Root mean square roughness
-
Rz – Maximum height of profile
-
Rt – Total height of roughness profile
You can highlight any result and press Enter to expand it for easy reading—great for operators working in shop environments.
Easy Profile Visualization
The system displays a surface profile graph to visualize the roughness trace. This is helpful for identifying patterns or inconsistencies beyond numerical values.
Ready for the Next Measurement
Once you’re done reviewing results, simply lift the stylus and move it to the next location. No complicated setup or recalibration is needed between traces—just measure and move on.
Built for Portability and Practical Use
When you’re finished, the Handysurf+ E35 breaks down easily:
-
Place the unit back in its storage box
-
Store your roughness patch, cables, and charger
-
Keep the reference card included in the kit—it’s a handy cheat sheet that saves time and reduces support calls
