A Surprising Tool for Measuring Wire, Tube, and More—Fast

It might look like a barcode scanner or even a toy blaster from a sci-fi movie, but the Handy Wire Scanner is a compact, high-precision wire measuring gage designed to give fast, repeatable diameter readings on the shop floor or in the lab.
Built by Aichelin’s Marposs Division, this portable device can measure wire, tubing, cable, dowel pins, springs, fasteners, and even fishing line—with microns of repeatability.
How It Works
The Handy Wire Scanner uses LED and CCD technology with crossed sensor beams. That means you don’t need to perfectly align the part—a little misalignment won’t affect the measurement. You just insert the part between the sensors, pull the trigger, and the display gives you a reading instantly.
Use it to measure:
- Wire or tubing during extrusion
- Fasteners or blanks in production
- Small components in a quality lab
- Tooling rods, nails, hose, and more
How Accurate Is It?
While using it casually, we saw repeatability within 3 microns—surprisingly precise for a handheld device. Factory specs rate it at ±0.5 microns, or about 20 millionths of an inch. That’s serious accuracy in a portable package.
For critical work, the unit comes with a mounting bracket and roller guide to lock in your setup.
